Those Bad Bad Boys (Writer Panel)

… or How to design a villain that doesn't make a reader chuckle (unless you want them to.) Today’s writer faces competition from thousands of new authors every year not to mention an ever-pickier readership. What makes any new fiction rise above the unwashed masses of books is a villain or villains who are unique, scary, and yes … understandable. Let’s review some basics of bad guy building, psychological foundations for psychos, and do a little one-on-one work with the villain you are creating. We might talk about fight scene development too. Any evil-doer can have a moustache: it’s the way he twirls it that gives your novel flare!

T. E. MacArthur is an author, artist, and historian living in the San Francisco Bay Area with her constant companion, Mac the cat. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in History from Cal State University and spent many an evening in subsequent Anthropology, Geology, Criminal Investigation and Art classes. Writing remains, however, her passion. She has written for several local and specialized publications and was even an accidental sports reporter for Reuters with three national bi-lines. The Volcano Lady: Volumes I & II follow the adventures of Victorian lady scientist Lettie Gantry, and are her first novels in publication. The Yankee Must Die novellas continue the thrilling adventures of Tom Turner following the time honored cliffhangers of dime novels, penny dreadfuls, and weekly serials. To put it mildly, T.E. has a love for all things Victorian (history and clothing from 1870 – 1890 in particular) and is having a lifelong affair with the writings of Jules Verne.

Designing Your Costume

You love Steampunk, but where do you begin to get the look you want? We will discuss historical research, fabric choices, and pattern designs available on the market. Also, some of what you need may be hanging in your closets or hidden at garage sales and thrift shops. Putting it all together is the first step towards joining in the fun.

Developing Your Character

The Steampunk look is a limitless style that is even more fun when you develop a character to go with it. We will discuss how to select a character and the execution of your own personal Steampunk image: who you are, where you came from, what is your theme or occupation, choice of voice to match the personality, and “toys” you can wear . . . The new you is waiting to show the world your own unique style.

The Steampunk Victorian will only be seen in his or her finest garb; Appearance is everything and everything is in your appearance.

However, as we all know, sometimes that look comes at quite a price tag. Well, if you want to bust some tags and only got 20 dollars (or less) in your pocket, you are in for a treat. We are going to show participants how to maximize their dollars while putting together some neat accessories, costume pieces and props on a budget.

While Steampunk is a distinct look, but it needn’t be expensive to get that polished veneer. With a couple bucks and a little elbow grease attendees will learn some simple projects that cost very little to make.
This panel is aimed at all ages and skill levels.

Steampunk Open Roundtable

Got a question about Steampunk that you are looking for an answer to? Have some ideas or thoughts about our genre, but have had nowhere to share them? This roundtable is for you.
Less a panel and more of an open forum, we plan to use this time to simply discuss the topic of Steampunk and all of its unique aspects. The goal is to inform folks who may be new to the genre as well as have open, positive discussion on various topics that folks may want to address.
This program is meant to stimulate thought and support and is open to any pertinent, positive contributions. Any bullying or evil science will result in vaporization of participant.
